Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Ex-Police Officer Kills Family, Ends Own Life: Tragic International Case

An unidentified former law enforcement agent reportedly took their own life following the murder of three individuals, which included two relatives, within the Yovoyan community located in the Badagry region of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro discovered that the incident, allegedly connected to an ongoing land conflict, took place during the early hours of Tuesday.

The individuals who passed away have been identified as Richard Atideka and Latevi Atideka, members of the Yovoyan community, along with Muji Onilude from the neighboring Gberefu community.

It was gathered that the deceased alongside some unidentified assailants while armed with weapons stormed the premises of Richard and Levi at midnight, went into their rooms and shot them in the process.

A source in the community who craved anonymity said the ex-police officer perpetrated the act at about 2am.

The victim arrived at the relatives' house around 2 AM and carried out the incident there. It is reported that he used a firearm to shoot both Richard and Latevi before fleeing the location.

At the same time, the former police officer, who was involved in a different assault, reportedly went to Onilude’s residence and fatally shot him as well.

“Oluyide is not a member of the family, but he was also shot by the ex-officer shortly after killing his two family members. Though according to a report lodged at the police station, members of the community confirmed to have heard sounds of gunshots at midnight.

"The reason for the incident has not been determined; however, reports suggest that there was a dispute regarding a piece of land owned by the family. It’s worth noting that this land is presently under judicial consideration," the source revealed, adding further details.

When verifying the incident on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Command stated that the culprit proceeded to end his own life following the commission of the act.

The official representative for the task force, Benjamin Hundeyin, informed PUNCH Metro that the former police officer reportedly consumed a toxic substance, lost consciousness, and was subsequently taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The individual suspected in the incident has passed away. This person murdered three individuals and reportedly ingested poison following the crime. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where medical personnel verified his death. The bodies of the victims and the deceased suspect have been placed in the morgue.

Hundeyin mentioned that the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for additional probing.
