Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Sena's New Phantom: The Smart Helmet Set to Revolutionize Riding

It seamlessly incorporates all of Sena’s technological know-how into one comprehensive package.

For years, Sena has been a pioneer in the world of motorcycle connectivity. The brand has a wide selection of Bluetooth communicators, and today, it even has a bunch of smart helmets for you to choose from. Its latest release, the Phantom, brings smart helmet capability up a notch.

It looks pretty cool and is packing quite a bit of tech. But is it all it’s cut out to be? So let’s take a closer look.

Sena’s Phantom It's a full-face helmet designed to offer you smooth communication, top-notch sound quality, and enhanced safety features—without requiring additional equipment. From the get-go, this model caters particularly well to those seeking a sleek and uncluttered look while still benefiting from advanced technology.

The Phantom represents an enhanced and seamlessly integrated iteration of what Sena already excels at. Featuring Mesh Intercom 3.0 and WAVE Intercom, this system offers numerous ways for you to remain connected within your group. Be it when navigating through a sizable convoy or simply conversing with someone onboard, the technology ensures both reliability and adaptability in maintaining communication.

Similar to many high-end helmet communication systems, audio quality plays a crucial role here. Sena collaborated with none other than Harman Kardon For top-tier speakers and microphone technology, both music, phone calls, and intercom conversations should be transmitted with clarity and sharpness. Additionally, there is AI-driven noise cancellation designed to eliminate wind and traffic sounds, enhancing communication quality. This feature might also reduce rider tiredness during extended journeys.

In addition to enhancing communication capabilities, Sena incorporated safety lighting features into the Phantom helmet. This includes both front and rear lights, where the latter function as brake lights activated during deceleration. While not an entirely innovative concept—since several other helmets already provide similar technology—you can also purchase adhesive accelerometer-based brake lights from platforms like Amazon. However, it will certainly be intriguing to observe how effectively these functionalities perform within Sena’s latest model of headgear.

  • Could This Be the Most Affordable Modular Motorcycle Helmet?

Sena has ensured that the Phantom can get Over-the-Air (OTA) updates through the Sena Motorcycles App. There’s no need to connect your helmet to your laptop or desktop; simply update it effortlessly with a touch of your smartphone.

But perhaps the most attractive feature of this helmet is its form factor. Unlike other Bluetooth communicators that require a bulky, externally mounted module, the Phantom keeps everything streamlined. The controls are flush-mounted, and dual internal antennas help maximize communication range. Despite packing in all this tech, Sena also managed to fit a larger battery without compromising comfort.

This high-tech lid comes at an apparently reasonable cost of $499 USD. Considering all the technology packed inside, it offers quite good value. Therefore, Sena’s Phantom appears to be a solid choice for cyclists seeking a helmet that combines safety with contemporary connectivity features. For those fond of group rides or needing dependable communication while cycling, it could certainly warrant consideration.

But what do you think? Is this something you’d add to your regular gear rotation?
