Unmasking Misinformation: Journalist’s Quest for Verified Truth (International Edition)

The Journalists as Fact Checkers workshop, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Africa for the Womentorship Champions, recently, was an unexpected catalyst for my growth as a female human rights defender. It effortlessly merged with my duties as both a journalist and an advocate, highlighting how journalism serves as a crucial act of service against misinformation. In Zimbabwe, where confirming straightforward facts such as fatality counts from road accidents can be difficult because of restricted access to data, fact-checking goes beyond being just part of one’s job; it transforms into a nuanced but important mode of defiance. One powerful takeaway was learning about “lateral reading,” which pushed me to go deeper than just skimming content and succumbing to click temptations. This change in mindset has provided me with a persistent critical outlook, examining each headline through the meticulous gaze of an investigator. Rather than taking information at ...

Will Smith Unveils His Most Personal Album Yet: A Deep Dive Into Self-Reflection

Will Smith is well-known for his ability to remake himself. Transitioning from a Grammy-winning rapper to a leading man in big-budget movies, this versatile performer has been at the forefront of entertainment for many years. However, following a challenging phase marked by both personal and career disruptions, Smith has revisited his origins as a musician with his forthcoming album. Based on a True Story , which he characterizes as his most reflective creation so far.

"It truly stems from my initial self-reflection," Smith states. Each track revolves around a facet of my identity that I either uncovered or wished to delve into, capturing something I felt compelled to express. This album represents the most comprehensive musical presentation I have ever undertaken."

This album includes collaborations with artists such as Big Sean, Teyana Taylor, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. It represents Smith’s return to the studio after almost two decades. The record incorporates gospel tunes along with introspective songwriting. Based on a True Story is a testament to Smith’s journey of self-discovery and resilience.

A specific song particularly encapsulates his core message. "My favorite hook from the album comes from J Cross with the lyrics 'I got the keys to heaven, but I earn them things in hell. I'll give my life for something, but my soul just ain't for sale,'" explains Smith. "That idea really resonates with me—the notion that the keys to heaven can be obtained through trials and tribulations here on earth. When facing difficulties, it doesn’t mean you’re wicked or have made mistakes; those challenges simply come as part of life."

Smith is well-acquainted with challenges. Following the repercussions of his notorious 2022 Oscars episode, his professional standing, marital relationship, and public image were all placed at risk. Rather than stepping back, he delved deeper into himself, employing music as a means to channel and articulate his feelings.

Smith’s thoughts go further than just music. In his forties, he sought guidance from renowned actor Denzel Washington during a challenging phase. "When I hit my early 40s, I reached out to Denzel. I told him, 'D, things aren’t going well for me right now.' He replied, 'Listen, man, this stage of life is known as the Funky 40s; everyone struggles in their 40s. Just chill. Then comes the f*** it 50s.' At that point, I mentioned, 'I’m actually 42.' His response was, 'Don’t sweat it, bro. Everything will work out fine.'"

The insights gleaned from Washington, along with guidance inspired by Tibetan Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön and historical icons such as Nelson Mandela, aided Smith in overcoming challenges and transforming them into artistic endeavors.

“There’s a certain psychological and emotional fortitude that you cultivate from leaning into difficulty, not trying to run away,” Smith says. “I’ve come to some really beautiful answers for myself—my perception of God and reality.”

As Smith prepares to release Based on a True Story He is preparing for his inaugural headlining tour, starting in June at the Mawazine Festival in Morocco and concluding in September in Paris. This tour will cover various stages of his life and career, merging past memories with his recent creative evolution.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Smith has multiple films in the pre-production stage, including Fast and Loose , Hancock 2 , I Am Legend 2 , and Planes, Trains and Automobiles But for the moment, he is completely engrossed in this fresh musical journey, convinced that his finest creations are still ahead of him.

“This is about to be the greatest creative run of my entire career,” he declares. “The things that I’m about to do in music and cinema, and just artistic expression and exploration—it’s like, I can’t sleep at night. I’m so ready to go.”
