Canada's PM Springboards Election Amid Blame on Trump

The newly appointed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced unexpectedly on Sunday election On April 28, stating that he required a robust mandate to address the threat posed by the U.S. President. Donald Trump 'Tariffs present challenges to economic growth.'

Even though the upcoming election wasn’t scheduled till October 20, Carney aims to take advantage of his Liberal party’s significant resurgence in the polls since January, following Trump’s threats. Canada and former prime minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.

"We are encountering the biggest challenge of our lives due to President Trump's unwarranted trade measures and his threats to our autonomy," Carney stated.

"There is still a great deal to accomplish in order to secure Canada. This includes investing in Canada, building up our nation, and bringing us all together. For these reasons, I am seeking a clear and affirmative endorsement from my fellow Canadians. Just now, I asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and schedule an election for April 28th, which she has approved," Carney stated to the press following his meeting with the Governor General, who serves as the personal representative of the monarch.
